Effects of Domestic Violence, Acculturation Stress, and Social Support on the Mental Health of Migrant Women in International Marriages

Abstract
Objectives: This study lent validity to the mediating effect of social support for migrant women from Korea in international marriages who are experiencingacculturation stress and family violence.

Methods: 213 Korean migrant women in international marriages were recruited from 14 multicultural family supportcenters. A survey was utilized, which assessedacculturation stress, domestic violence, social support, depression, and other aspects of psychological wellbeing.

Results: The women in the study scored below average on items assessing acculturation stress. The results of the study also revealed that economic violence was correlated with family violence. The researchers conclude that the average levels of social support reported by the women in the study contributed to their psychological wellbeing.
Conclusions: The results of the study support the mediating effect of social support and suggest that social support interventions should be offered to migrant women in international marriages.
